A più di 1 mese dal termine della stagione regolare i Belfast Giants hanno già messo in bacheca il League Trophy. Sono infatti irraggiungibili in classifica e in EIHL il vincitore della Regular Season viene iscritto all’albo come Campione. I playoff invece, che si concluderanno ad Aprile con una Final Four a Nottingham, serviranno per attribuire un ulteriore trofeo. Complimenti quindi ai ragazzi di Paul Adey che stanno letteralmente dominando un campionato che non ha saputo esprimere delle rivali credibili e che sono, se non altro, i primi in Europa ad archiviare vittoriosamente il campionato.
Curioso notare come un tale dominio non sia accompagnato da statistiche personali in grado di mettere il luce un particolare talento. Top Punti dei Nord Irlandesi è Evan Cheverie (canadese, ex Morzine-Avoriaz), solo 14° nella speciale classifica generale. Top Scorer Kevin Saurette (canadese), 7° in generale, mentre il giocatore di maggior talento, Dustin Whitecotton (canadese), 9 anni in Germania di cui 5 in DEL, è “solo” 17° in classifica punti. Da Oltre Manica insomma arriva la conferma, come se ce ne fosse bisogno, che questo è uno sport di squadra se ce n’è uno. Chiedere ad Ovechkin, Bilyaletdinov e soci nei dintorni di Sochi che ora crediamo siano informati sull’argomento.
I Nottingham Panthers, i più accreditati avversari ad inizio stagione, se non altro per il palmares degli ultimi 4 anni, si sono spenti dopo aver raggiunto la semifinale di Continental Cup, disputata, peraltro con onore, ad Asiago. Da lì in poi si sono persi nella mediocrità, ma, possiamo starne certi, riaccenderanno la luce per i play-off e per la Challenge Cup. Vedremo con quali esiti.
