Lady Byng Memorial Trophy

Il premio come “giocatore gentiluomo” viene assegnato ogni anno al giocatore che “ha esibito il miglior tipo di sportività e di condotta da gentleman combinate con l’abilità sportiva” come si legge nello statuto del premio. il trofeo, che prende il nome da Marie Evelyn Moreton (Lady Byng), moglie del visconte Byng di Vimy, un eroe della guerra di Vimy Ridge e Governatore Generale del Canada dal 1921 al 1926. Lady Byng, grande tifosa di hockey, decise di donare il trofeo alla NHL nel 1925; il primo vincitore fu Frank Nighbor degli Ottawa Senators. Dopo che Frank Boucher dei New York Rangers vinse il trofeo 7 volte in 8 anni Lady Byng fu talmente impressionata da consegnargli la coppa originale in maniera definitiva donando poi una seconda coppa alla NHL nel 1936-1937; alla morte di Lady Byng, nel 1949, la NHL adottò per il trofeo il nome attuale e presento un’altro trofeo mentre l’originale fu distrutto nell’ incendio della casa di Boucher nel 1962. Molti giocatori hanno vinto per più volte il trofeo e tra questi sono da nominare sicuramente atleti del calibro di Wayne Gretzky (5), Red Kelly (4) Bauer, Delvecchio, Bossy, Francis e Pavel Datsyuk (3); tra le squadre, anche in virtù delle 8 vittorie di Boucher, la più premiata sono i New York Rangers (15) seguita da Detroit (13), Toronto (9), Chicago e Boston (8) e Los Angeles (5). Come curiosità c’è da dire che nessun portiere si è mai aggiudicato il riconoscimento e solo 2 difensori possono vantarlo: Bill Quackenbush e Red Kelly; dagli anni ’50 nessun difensore lo ha più vinto.
