Alla fine dell’incredibile partita contro il Cortina ho aspettato vicino agli spogliatoi uno dei protagonisti e uno dei migliori giocatori della squadra bianco blu, Mike Souza. Lui è stato inoltre chiamato in nazionale dal coach del blue team, proprio ieri!
HT: Ciao Mike, è stata una gara bilanciata fino all’ultimo secondo, avete segnato tre goal in power play, il Cortina voleva vincere questa gara più dell’Asiago o no?
MS: No, noi vogliamo sempre vincere contro le altre squadre, sai, Io penso che abbiamo tre buone linee, una buona squadra quest’anno a Cortina. Ogni singola vittoria è importante, specialmente dopo partite del genere. Il primo periodo è stato difficoltoso per noi, la nostra terza linea ha fatto la differenza sostanzialmente, quindi se noI abbiamo tutta la forza necessaria per far bene realizziamo che abbiamo la possibilità di vincere, quindi questo è l’importante.
HT: La tua squadra ha la miglior difesa, ha fatto più goal delle altre squadre, sette partite vinte, ma dove vuole arrivare questo Cortina?
MS: Io penso che la cosa più importante è che ci siano progressi durante tutto l’anno, che noi miglioriamo sempre di più, ovviamente avremo degli alti e bassi durante la stagione, faremo un passo alla volta, è ovvio che faremo tutto ciò che è in nostro potere per arrivare preparati per i play off, ma questo non significa che tu vincerai tutte le gare lungo il percorso, ma solo che proverai a vincerle tutte. Fino a questo momento abbiamo giocato un buon hockey, il nostro coach sta facendo un lavoro ottimo con i ragazzi, tutti i giocatori sono molto competitivi, pensa che alcune gare sono state risolte nel terzo periodo, a dimostrazione della loro ottima condizione di forma.
HT: Per quanto riguarda la tua condizione fisica, come ti senti in questo momento? L’anno scorso senza il tuo “gemello” Corupe ci è sembrato di vedere il tuo gioco un po’ sofferente, ma quest’anno sei partito bene, hai forse trovato la linea giusta con cui giocare?
MS: La maggior parte dei ragazzi si sente bene, cosi anch’io, abbiamo lavorato molto duramente prima dell’inizio della stagione, c’alleniamo ogni giorno della settimana, i ragazzi diventano sempre più forti fisicamente, questo è importante se vuoi far progressi durante l’anno, in modo che tu possa arrivare alla fine della stagione nella miglior condizione possibile. Con i miei compagni di linea/squadra l’anno scorso abbiamo sempre provato a fare del nostro meglio durante la stagione, per quanto mi riguarda personalmente per me è importante trovare qualcuno che mi assista nei goal, ora non voglio spiegare le ragioni per cui l’anno scorso abbiamo avuto qualche difficoltà in attacco, non è importante, ora conta solo il presente davanti a noi.
HT: Martedì scorso c’è stata la gara contro l’Appiano per la coppa Italia, la federazione italiana ha mandato sul ghiaccio due arbitri, hai notato qualche differenza dal tuo punto di vista?
MS: In Nord America se non erro in qualche categoria ci sono due arbitri sul ghiaccio, ora non ricordo bene, ma penso che questo comunque crei un bel po’ di confusione, personalmente mi piace di più il sistema di un arbitro solo sul campo, ma sai, due differenti modi di pensare, due teste diverse, tutti e due chiamano molte penalità…troppa confusione, al momento credo che la miglior opzione sia un solo arbitro!
HT: Tu giochi per il Cortina sin dal 2006, senti di aver imparato qualcosa durante questi anni?
MS: Certo ho imparato qualcosa! Ogni cosa diventa più familiare se giochi nella stessa squadra e nello stesso luogo per tre anni di seguito, tu conosci già la società, i giocatori che rimangono la stagione successiva, è quindi senz’altro un vantaggio questo ad ogni modo!
HT: Quest’anno sai che potresti essere chiamato in nazionale italiana (convocazione giunta ieri in giornata), cosa sei pronto ad offrire all’Italia? E dimmi per favore se ti senti un po’ italiano, so che alcuni tuoi parenti sono di origine italiana…
MS: Non lo so, sinceramente non ho mai partecipato prima, è interessante però il sistema che offre ad un ragazzo americano come me di giocare per la sua seconda nazionalità di origine, ma allo stesso modo penso di poter portare le stesse cose che porto al Cortina. Penso sia importante per l’Italia avere giocatori che possono giocar per entrambe le nazionali, americana o canadese che siano. Ad ogni modo io sono pronto a fare ogni cosa essi mi chiederanno di fare! Io assolutamente mi sento italiano, crescere negli Stati Uniti è diverso che crescere in Europa, molti europei provengono proprio dall’Europa, mentre molti Americano provengono da diverse parti del mondo, le persone americane sono fiere di essere americane, ma sono anche fiere delle origini dei loro familiari, cosi è anche per me, sono fiero della mia origine italiana!
HT: Per ultimo ti vorrei chiedere quali sono i tuoi obiettivi personali quest’anno.
MS: Per me è importante che quest’anno arriviamo pronti e preparati per i play off, abbiamo tutte le possibilità per fare bene, abbiamo una gran bella squadra, grandi giocatori, è importante vincere il più possibile, non importa se la Coppa Italia o cos’altro, quando giochi vuoi sempre vincere!

Interview with the American-Italian of Cortina!

At the end of the incredible game against Cortina I waited close to the dressroom for one of the protagonist and the best player of the blue-white team, Mike Souza. He also was called to play for the national team yesterday by the coach Rick Cornacchia, just yesterday!
HT: Hi Mike, a balanced game till the last second, three scores thanks to power-play, Cortina wanted to win this game more than Asiago or not?
MS: No, We always wanna win against the others teams, you know, I think We have three good lines, a very good team this year in Cortina. Every single win is important, especially after a game like that just played. First period was not very good, but for example our third line was very competitive, so if We have all the necessary force to do well We realize We have the chance to win, so that’s important.
MS: Your team has the best defense, it has done more goal than the other teams, seven games won, but where does this Cortina want to arrive?
MS: I Think that the important thing is that there are progresses during all the year, that We get better more and more, We’ll have up and down for sure during the season, we’ll do step by step, it’s obviously we’ll do all is possible to play the best hockey during the play off, but it doesn’t mean you’ll win every game along the way, you wanna try to win every game along the way. Until today We shown a very good hockey, our coach is making a great job inside the team, all the guys are very competitive, some of our games was resolved in the third period, so I think that’s an important sign of our condition.
HT: As for as your physical condition, how do you feel in this moment? Last year without your twin Corupe it seemed to us your way of playing suffered a lot, but this year you started well, have you found the right line to play with?
MS: The most of the guys are feeling pretty good, We worked very hard during the pre-season, We have our routine practice every day of the week, all the guys are becoming stronger, that’s important if you want to make progresses during the season, so that you can arrive at the end of the season in the best condition is possible. Last year I have always with my teammates tried to do our best, as for as me personally it’s important to find someone that help me to scores goals, for example now with Joe Cullen or with my other teammates, but you know sometimes is just a question of being lucky. I don’t wanna tell why last year my line score few goals, it’s not important now, it’s important what we’ll do this year, present is important, not the past.
HT: Last Tuesday there have been the game against Appiano for the Italian Cup. On the Ice the federation decided to put two referees instead of one, have you seen some difference?
MS: In the North America if I’ m not wrong in some category there is two referees on the ice, now I don’t remember well, but I think that this could create more confusing, I like the one referee system personally, but you know, two persons call a lot of penalties, two different heads on the ice, too confusing maybe…at the moment I think one referee is the beast option!
HT: You have been playing for Cortina since 2006, do you feel having learned something in Italian championship during this years?
MS: I have learned something! Everything became more familiar if you play in the same team and in the same place for three years, you know the management, the players that remain in the team the season following, that’s an advantage anytime!
HT: You know this years you can be called from the coach of the national team, what are you read to offer to Italy? And tell me please if you feel a little Italian, I know you have some Italian relatives…
MS: I don’t know, I have never participated before, It’s interesting the system that give the possibility to an American guy as me to play with the second provenance nationality, but anyway I think I can bring all the same things I can bring for Cortina. I think it’s an important advantage for Italy having guys who can play for the both nationals, American or Canadian they are. Anyway I’m ready to do anything they ask me. I absolutely fell Italian, for sure, growing up in United States is different than growing up in Europe, most of European people come from Europe, most of American people come from all over the world, American people are proud of being American, but they also are proud of the nationality provenance of their families, so is for me, I’m proud to have Italian origin.
HT: I would like to ask you what’s your personal aim this season.
MS: Personally, It’s important We do a good season to arrive to the play off ready and strong, we have all the chances to do well, a very good team, great players, so it’s important for us to win as much as possible, it doesn’t matter if Italian cup or something else, when you play you always wan to win!
